Cucu for Coco

C H A N E L.

A few words come to mind… Timeless. Iconic. Couture. Freedom. Equality. Fashion. Effortless. Classic. Forever.

Coco Chanel, the brains & beauty behind the signature label. A woman who evolved into a full fledged business woman with an eye for superior style. Her fashion sense created waves, influencing many designers over the decades.

Known for her exemplar esthetic, Chanel became famous for her paragon collections featuring sophisticated silhouettes in silk, tweed & jersey. Creating coveted visionary constructions was her modus operandi… A clever Coco knew too well what women wanted when it came to fashion and thus she delivered! Updating the closets of many was her standard, as she wanted women to look and feel fabulous in her designs, while also maintaining an element of comfort and ease– hence the little black dress, a piece she famously conceived. Clean lines and simple shapes with decadent fabrics, fancy embellishments, as well as adornments, made for a shining example of House ChanelRemembered as a fashion legend, Chanel was the beautiful mind behind the innovative– and now, often duplicated– use of stripes, jersey, pearls, hats, tweed, drop-waist dresses, pristine combinations of black & white, and the ever distinguished quilted handbag with gold chain-linked straps. In addition, Coco worked closely with exclusive French perfumeries to develop her own signature scent: Chanel N˚5.

As a tribute to her imaginative fashion spirit, I have gone ahead and compiled a series of photographs featuring her designs as well as her look, both personal and commercial… View the pictures below for a taste of Chanel!

Enjoy! XO, SC

Magical Island of Treasure & Music

This year I attended the Treasure Island Music Festival on Saturday October 19th. It was my very first time & it was *MAGICAL*

Good friends, good music, good times!

As it was my first time at this music festival, I really liked and appreciated the chill atmosphere! With spectacular views of the San Francisco Bay & Skyline, there is arguably no better setting to watch live music! An intimate feeling, although among a substantial crowd, this setting may seem unattractive to some but the perks are in watching live acts without any overlap. Besides, the energy of the crowd is magnetic and adds to the overall live music experience! Additionally, Treasure Island Music Festival provides an array of joyous and creative activities for the festival goer. One can shake their groove thang at the Silent Disco, make daisy chain hairpieces, watch as artists work on mural sized displays, get their face painted and plenty more!!

A highly recommended Music Festival, peep the pictures below to get an idea… some shots are taken by yours truly, others by noted photographers… Enjoy!

Serpent Spectacular

Rebirth. Resurrection. Initiation. Wisdom.

Just a few of the words associated with the powerful medicine bestowed to us by the mighty snake. With a contentious mythical reputation, the snake has always been a creature of paradox; seen as both a symbol of the higher or the lower, the good or the evil, the devil or the healer. No wonder this animal resonates with our humanity as we learn day in and day out the inner struggle of our own personal inconsistencies– as well as those of others and of our society.

Across cultures the snake has a variety of different meanings. In Native American art and lore the snake is a powerful and dramatic healer that brings about a transcendental transformation, enabling the individual to transmute all poisons within the body or otherwise. For Meso-American cultures the serpent is depicted as feathered and flying. Known as Quetzalcoatl, the Patron of the Toltecs, legend has it that his dominion is the heavens, the stars and all the motions of the universe. Grecian mythos states the snake signifies alchemy and healing, where wisdom is expressed via medicinal associations and prowess. Additionally, snakes or serpents represent sexuality and creative life; growing, ascending through various energy channels and developing new wisdom and capabilities.

Shedding and rebirth are other associations made when the snake appears both in mythology and lore cross-culturally. This characteristic is key in learning to develop from the past in order to outgrow the old and transform  i n t o  the new.

Snakes have come up lately in my life, especially during the final months of Summer as we transitioned into fall. Undergoing personal changes, this often reproachable reptile appeared to me during a trip to the river… as I was going through a time of change and transition. Although scared by his appearance, instead of acting aghast I embraced my fear and found peace with my situation. A lesson soon to be lived and learned… According to Ted Andrews, author of Animal Speak, when snakes or serpents emerge in your life it is time to look into a rebirth of new powers of creativity and wisdom.

Below striking snake images, a few  from The Wild Unknown tarot deck featuring the wands- a family of snakes! Also, stunning jewels that remind me to harness and tap into the many charming snake traits of clairvoyance, compassion, cunning ferocity, creativity, transformation and healing!

Medicine! Love! Blessings! Magic!

Artistically Inclined

Walking home yesterday I stumbled across  a charming little art gallery on Valencia Street, SF: Incline Gallery.

A unique setting of ramps and volume with plenty of natural light, the space that encapsulates this contemporary art gallery works towards cultivating local, community growth among visual and performative  artists.

Lovingly and delicately curated, I highly suggest popping into Incline Gallery. You are sure to find tranquility amidst busy urban living…

Pretty In Punk

Long Live Vivienne Westwood: Queen of Punk!

As a Punk & New Wave fashion innovator, Vivienne Westwood created an exquisite synthesis between clothing & music.

Shaping her designs around this aforementioned union gave birth to the 1970’s PUNK FASHION SCENE. Collaborating with Malcolm McLaren of the Sex Pistols made this transformation possible as his influence directly correlated with Vivienne’s vision. Westwood was interested in “seeing if one could put a spoke in the system.” Thus creating styles that revered anarchy and chaos– as a means to express self identity without compromising to the attachments or obligations of the greater social schema… Political Fashion Indeed!

Vivienne drew from various looks to construct her Punk Collection: BDSM Fashion; Bondage gear & attire; Safety pins; Razor blades; Bicycle chains on clothing; Spiked dog collars as jewelry; Crazy Hair (mow-hawks) & Heavy Makeup (thick eyeliner). Additionally, Westwood sought to make the traditional elements of style seem risqué, using fabrics such as tartan to add dimension, texture & further shock value.

Leading the pack as trend setter, and always maintaing the cutting edge, Vivienne Westwood’s creations have had transformative, metamorphic effects on fashion. A Sophisticated Rebel, Vivienne epitomizes the StonerChíc mentality … XoXo!

Honoring John

John Winston Lennon, born on October 9th, 1940 in Liverpool, England, UK.

An iconic, renowned & admired musician the world over!

Honoring John today, and everyday, because of his whimsical, yet pragmatic vision of peace, love & understanding. A true humanitarian, John revolutionized rock/pop music by creating a platform for open communication… His music, his artistry, his power all from deep within his heart.

It saddens me to think of John not being here with us today. I know he wouldn’t want us to lament his passing, but instead make joy of the life he so graciously led… Sometimes I imagine going to see Lennon play live… or picking up his latest cd… All a beautiful, twisted dream.

May John’s sweet, humble soul rest forever in peace among the angels!

Beautiful Prayer

Rumi

A magnificent quote from the distinguished Rumi. A beautifully descriptive image is left lingering in my mind’s eye… Envisioning lovers intertwined, connected, like wild birds freely mating as they float across the majestic crystal blue sky.

Honoring Guruji & The Lineage

BKS Iyengar & Krishnamacharya

BKS Iyengar & Krishnamacharya

I am a yogi. By no means enlightened, although making a humble attempt to learn more, grow more and be present, more.

The only way I know how to go about this slow, challenging, fulfilling and yes, sometimes frustrating, process, is to: practice, practice for all is coming…

Whenever I notice myself falling into the perils of my mind, I search for my breath, I slow down my thoughts and I think…I am not the first, nor will I be the last to go through self created struggle, instead redirect the  inner conversation, notice the beauty around you in the present moment, breathe, let go and m o v e on. This is by no means an easy task, it is time consuming for it must be done everyday; as well as humbling, and at times, painfully revealing. No matter, I feel deep gratitude and eternal blessings to be on this path. This is where I am meant to be, right now, living this experience, learning from this current teaching. In my heart and in my soul I have profound admiration and reverence for Krishnamacharya–also known as the father of modern yoga & BKS Iyengar–one of the foremost teachers in the world who has developed a keen mode of practice that infuses intelligence in the body and calmness in the mind, creating healing for any body that looks to search the self.

This posting is to honor, appreciate and ultimately recognize the efforts of all yogis: past, present & future. Yogis who diligently and genuinely work their shadow places to harness more light, more breath, and more life… May all beings be happy & free.

Lots of Love, SC
